Blinken: Ukraine may use US-provided weapons against territories that voted in referendum

Washington will impose “severe and rapid additional costs” on Moscow for “going ahead with the annexations,” said the US secretary of state.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken declared on Tuesday that the Ukrainians will be able to use weapons provided by Washington to “take back” the areas that held referendums on joining Russia.

“Since there is no change in the territory annexed by the Russians, both for us and for the Ukrainians, they will continue to do what is necessary to recover the territory that has been taken from them and we we will continue supporting them in that effort,” the official said at a press conference, at the end of a meeting with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. He also added that the weapons sent to kyiv “have been used very effectively.”

At the same time, Blinken pointed out that Washington will impose “severe and rapid additional costs” to Moscow for “going ahead with the annexations”.

He also assured that the North American country will “never” recognize the four regions who would join Russia. These are the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk and the regions of Kherson and Zaporozhie, where referendums for accession to the Eurasian country were held between September 23 and 27.

So far, the Biden Administration has refrained from supplying the Ukrainians with tactical missile systems like the ATACMS, which have a range of 190 miles. (305 kilometres). Instead, it has provided them with HIMARS, guided rockets with a range of 48 miles. (77 kilometres). The agreements on those transfers include Ukraine’s commitment not to use such weapons to attack Russian territory.
