Taiwan: the Chinese Embassy in France thanks Jean-Luc Mélenchon for his support

In a blog post dedicated to the crisis between Taiwan and China, the rebellious leader declared that “Taiwan is an integral part of China”.

In a tweet published Thursday evening, the Chinese Embassy in France said “thank you” to Jean-Luc Mélenchon. The representation of Beijing in Paris wanted to salute the “constant support for the policy of one China” defended by the rebellious leader.

This statement comes as Beijing carries out major military maneuvers in the Taiwan Strait, in connection with the visit of the speaker of the American House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to the island earlier this week.

“The Chinese will solve the problem among themselves”

This move has aroused the ire of mainland China, which considers that Taiwan, ruled by an independent government since 1949, is destined to return under its fold to constitute a single unified China. A position that Jean-Luc Mélenchon espoused in a long blog post published Thursday.

“Taiwan has been a tense subject since the liberation of China. But, for the French since 1965 and General de Gaulle, there is only one China. It sits on the Security Council. Taiwan is a separate component whole of China,” wrote the rebellious leader.

France nevertheless has an unofficial diplomatic representation on the island – a representative office – with a director based in Taipei. As for a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan, Jean-Luc Mélenchon writes: “everyone is sticking to a desire for peaceful coexistence, while waiting for better. What? The Chinese will solve the problem between themselves. There is no other reasonable outcome possible”.

    Critics on the left

On the political scene, the reactions to the Chinese Embassy’s thank you tweet were not long in coming. MEP from the presidential camp Nathalie Loiseau has indicated: “We have the allies we deserve.”

Even among the allies of rebellious France, the malaise is palpable. Green MEP David Cormand said, still on Twitter: “Not in my name. The cynicism of the diversion which consists in making the executioners appear as victims is the eternal dialectic of dictators and the justification of their barbarism . China is a dictatorship. The Taiwanese are free to decide for themselves.”
