Hours before, Robert Rheams had already tried to steal a car.
A man suspected of breaking into a home in Hammond (Indiana, USA), was shot to death on Sunday of last week by a woman who sought to protect her home and her two children, local media reported citing the Office Tangipahoa County Sheriff’s Office.
Robert Rheams, 51, invaded a private home at night. He was wearing a ski mask and was armed with a shovel and cross wrench. Upon running into the owner there was a physical altercation and she finally shot him with a firearm. The invader died at the scene, according to the county coroner.
A few hours before those events, Rheams had tried to steal a car. After asking for a ride, he punched the driver until the vehicle fell into a ditch, local police chief Jimmy Travis said. The injured driver managed to get out of the car and get to safety..
Rheams had previously been convicted of a similar offense and was on probation at the time of the incident, having served 20 years in prison for armed robbery.
So far no one has been arrested. Travis stated that the owner acted in accordance with the Second Amendment, which establishes the right to protect oneself and family members in the event of a home invasion. However, the investigation is not yet complete.
