The earthquake, which killed several thousand people in Morocco, sparked a wave of solidarity around the world, with several countries and organizations offering their aid to Rabat. The leaders of the 27 member countries of the European Union notably co-signed a letter to King Mohammed VI of Morocco, saying they were “fully united” and “ready to help in any way that you (the king, editor’s note) deem useful”.

At least 2,012 people died and 2,059 injured, 1,404 of whom are in very serious condition, after a powerful earthquake hit Morocco overnight from Friday to Saturday, causing huge damage and spreading panic in Marrakech , a mecca for tourism, and several other cities, according to a new official report published Saturday evening. An assessment likely to worsen as research continues.
The International Red Cross has alerted the international community to the importance of aid for Morocco, citing needs for “months or even years”.
