Tunisians are called to vote on Monday for or against the constitutional reform project which will strengthen the powers of President Kaïs Saïed, thus ending the parliamentary system in place since 2014. The independent higher body for the elections did not only two months to prepare for this election. On-site report by Lilia Blaise and Hamdi Tlili for France 24.
Tunisians vote on Monday, July 25, on a new Constitution in a referendum that has a good chance of being adopted and will mark a turning point for this young democracy by making it switch back to an ultra-presidential regime, at the risk of a dictatorial drift.
This country of 12 million inhabitants has been in the grip of a serious political crisis since President Kaïs Saïed granted himself all the powers a year ago and runs it by decree, arguing that the situation is unmanageable. “A coup”, according to its opponents, “an excessive concentration of power”, according to the defenders of rights.
