An official government source, cited by Moroccan media, responded to French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna, who mentioned an invitation launched this summer by King Mohammed VI to the President of the Republic.
Will Emmanuel Macron visit Morocco soon? A visit by the French president “is not on the agenda and is not scheduled”, indicated an official Moroccan government source, cited by the Moroccan press agency MAP and relayed by the country’s main media.
This source was reacting to an interview with Catherine Colonna this Friday on LCI, in which the French Minister of Foreign Affairs mentioned an invitation launched by Mohammed VI to Emmanuel Macron.
A “unilateral initiative”
“The King of Morocco renewed his invitation to the President of the Republic recently, this summer when they spoke,” explained the head of French diplomacy. “The president is invited, it remains to find dates. I would like to point out that there has been no postponement, no date had been set. This invitation having been made, I hope that we can honor it .”
In response, the Moroccan government source cited by the kingdom’s media was surprised that Catherine Colonna had taken “this unilateral initiative and given herself the freedom to make a non-concerted announcement concerning an important bilateral deadline.”
“Controversies” denounced by France
Emmanuel Macron denounced on Tuesday “controversies which have no reason to exist” on the bilateral relationship between the France and the Moroccowhile Rabat has so far not accepted the aid offered by Paris, after the devastating earthquake in the Marrakech region.
The relationships between the Morocco and the France have been tense since Emmanuel Macron has tried to get closer to Algeria, which broke off diplomatic relations with Rabat in 2021, accused of “hostile acts”. THE Morocco also blames the France not to align with the United States and Israel who have recognized the “Moroccan nature” of Western Sahara, controlled almost 80% by the Morocco.
