German Chancellor Olaf Scholz sends his condolences this Saturday to the relatives of the victims of the “devastating” earthquake which killed at least 296 people in Morocco.
“This is terrible news from Morocco. In these difficult times, our thoughts are with the victims of this devastating earthquake. Our sympathy goes out to all those affected by this natural disaster”, wrote on X (ex-Twitter ) the German chancellor.
The regions of Marrakech and Al-Houaz particularly affected
According to the authorities, the earthquake particularly hit the provinces and communes of Al-Haouz, Marrakech, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudant.
In addition to Marrakech, the tremor was felt in Rabat, Casablanca, Agadir and Essaouira, causing panic among the population.
Numerous damages recorded in the Marrakech region
The earthquake that occurred last night in Morocco caused widespread damage.
Images show in particular that part of a minaret collapsed on the famous Jemaa el-Fna square in Marrakech, injuring at least two people.
An earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale
According to the National Center for Scientific and Technical Research (CNRST) based in Rabat, the earthquake that hit Morocco last night is estimated at magnitude 7 on the Richter scale. This is the largest ever recorded in the country, according to local media.
Its epicenter was in the province of Al-Haouz, southwest of the tourist city of Marrakech.

Earthquake kills at least 296 people in Morocco
At least 296 people died in a powerful earthquake that devastated Morocco overnight from Friday to Saturday, according to a still provisional report.
“According to a provisional report, this earthquake caused the death of 296 people,” indicated the Moroccan authorities.
At least 153 people were also injured in the earthquake.
