Covid-19: scientists deplore the low prescription of Paxlovid for fragile people

In the midst of the Covid-19 epidemic resumption in France, members of Covars are calling on doctors to prescribe the drug Paxlovid more to the most fragile people.

The bar of 1,000 hospitalizations per day on average for patients with Covid-19 was exceeded on Thursday, a first since the end of October, almost at the peak of the 8th wave of the epidemic.

On this first day of December, the 9th wave of coronavirus in France – as confirmed by epidemiologists and Elisabeth Borne on Tuesday – is worrying and could disrupt the end-of-year celebrations. Especially since French hospitals are facing a triple epidemic: Covid-19, influenza and bronchiolitis via RSV.

To avoid congestion in services due to the coronavirus, several scientists have recalled the existence of Paxlovid, Pfizer’s antiviral drug, which they consider too little prescribed.

“You really need to use it a lot more”

“There is an effective treatment for the virus which protects 90% of mortality but which is not prescribed enough and which concerns fragile people and the elderly”, declared on BFMTV, Xavier Lescure, infectious disease specialist at the Bichat hospital in Paris.

Recommended since January 21 by the High Authority for Health (HAS) and the National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM), this treatment “targets the enzyme necessary for viral replication, the 3C-like protease, and by inhibiting its action, it blocks the replication of SARS-CoV-2 in the body”, indicated Public Health France.

Immunologist Brigitte Autran, who chairs the Committee for Monitoring and Anticipating Health Risks (Covars) – which replaced the Scientific Council – clarified on France 2 on Monday: “It is an antiviral which blocks the replication (of the virus , note), which allows, when taken in the first three or 5 days of symptoms, to prevent the evolution towards serious forms.

But, according to her, her prescription would not yet meet the expectations of the committee.

“There were around 15,000 prescriptions during the month of October but it is still insufficient, it really needs to be used a lot more,” she lamented.

    An “information problem”

General practitioners still prescribe Paxlovid too little because of a “problem of information, awareness”, for his part regretted Xavier Lescure.

However, at the end of January, the HAS announced that it had “developed rapid responses to support city doctors with the arrival of the first doses of Paxlovid”.

“Doctors have lots of things to do,” noted the infectious disease specialist.

He then launched an appeal, on our antenna, to people considered to be at risk of contracting serious forms of Covid-19: “If your doctor does not prescribe it for you, you can ask for antiviral treatment”.
