Bronchiolitis: emergency room visits and hospitalizations on the rise again after the holidays

After school holidays which coincided with a drop in severe cases of bronchiolitis in children under two, the figures have started to rise again and continue to reach very high levels.

Numbers on the rise again. The number of visits to the emergency room and hospitalization of children for cases of bronchiolitis increased again during the week stretching from November 14 to 20 after the drop observed during school holidays. Current levels continue to be particularly high.

According to figures from Sante Publique France, 6,882 children under the age of two went to the emergency room during this week and 90% of them were under the age of one. 2,552 children under the age of two were hospitalized, and 94% of them had less than one. These numbers are up about 25% from the previous week.

Visits to the emergency room therefore return to a slightly lower level than before the school holidays, but hospitalizations are on the rise.

On November 9, the Minister of Health Francois Braun announced the implementation of the ORSAN plan in hospitals, paving the way for specific arrangements for establishments. The Mulhouse hospital launched the white plan on Tuesday, thus giving itself the possibility of mobilizing all the staff and deprogramming operations.

The intensity of the disease thus remains particularly marked throughout mainland France and Guadeloupe, with the status of “epidemic alert”.
