The RIAA will recognize artists, record label executives and lawmakers who have fueled the rise of Latin music in the United States at a ceremony in Washington on September 19.
The RIAA’s annual celebration of outstanding achievements and careers includes the Icon Award for Gloria Estefan, Artist of the Year for Sebastian YatraIndustry Pioneer for Emilio Estefan, Executive of the Year for Maria Fernandez of Sony Music Entertainment and Politicians of the Year for representatives Veronica Escobar and Maria Elvira Salazar.
The Cuban singer Gloria Estefan, the producer Emilio Estefan and the Colombian singer Sebastian Yatra will be the artists honored this year by the Recording Industry Association of the United States (RIAA) for his impact on American music and culture.
The RIAA reported this Thursday in a statement that on September 19 these artists will receive the award RIAA Honors, which honors artists, record label executives and political leaders. This year all the awards have gone to Spanish-speaking personalities.
Gloria Estefan will be honored with the Idol award; Emilio Estefan will receive the Pioneer of Music and Yatra the Artist of the Year.
Latin music has lit up the US pop and streaming charts this year. Latin music revenues surpassed $1 billion for the first time and are growing significantly faster than the overall industry in the country, said Mitch Glazier, president and CEO of the RIAA.
Gloria Estefan has previously been awarded eight Grammys and four Latin Grammys. She was nominated for an Oscar for the song “Music Of My Heart” from the film of the same name. She also received an American Music Award for lifetime achievement and is the first Hispanic artist to be inducted into the U.S. Songwriters Hall of Fame.
In 2015, then-President Barack Obama honored Emilio and Gloria Estefan with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Yatra has been nominated for a Grammy and won two Latin Grammys for best pop song for his hit “Tacones rojo” and best pop vocal album for “Dharma.”. His song “Vagabundo” has been certified Latin Platinum by the RIAA in the United States and also reached first place on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart. He was nominated for an Oscar for the song “Dos Oruguitas” from the film “Encanto” disney.
Emilio Estefan has worked as a music, television and film producer instrumental in the development of the careers of his wife Gloria, as well as Shakira, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and Jon Secada, among many other notable artists. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was inducted into the Latin Composers Hall of Famein addition to being recognized with 19 Grammy.
They will also be honored Maria Fernandez, executive vice president and executive director of operations of Latin Iberia in Sony Music Entertainmentwho will receive the Executive of the Year award, and the US congresswomen of Latin origin Veronica Escobar and Maria Elvira Salazar, awarded with the Legislators of the Year award.
“As promoters of the musical community and fans, in RIAA “We are very grateful to be able to honor superstars and leaders who have used their voices and platforms to change culture and break the mold of creativity,” said Mitch Glazier, president of the RIAA.
This year it was decided to honor Latin artists because “Latin music was at the top of popularity and filled the playlists,” he stated. According to RIAALatin music revenues in the United States exceed $1 billion annually and are growing considerably faster than the rest of the industry.
