What controversy they face Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson after making public an initiative with which they plan to help the victims of the catastrophic fires that recently occurred in Maui, Hawaii.
It was last August when the duo took to their social networks to publish a video in which they presented the Maui People’s Fund to raise money to combat the damage that the fires left on the island.
“We are honored to kick off this $10 million campaign and ask for your help to donate to those who have lost their homes. We thank you in advance for your contribution,” the celebrities explained.
And although the initiative was initially applauded by dozens of Internet users, the narrative soon changed, generating criticism regarding its financial solvency and refusal to put “out of pocket.”
“This is so ironic… A billionaire and a millionaire asking you to donate YOUR money?”“You are both billionaires… Don’t use other people’s money to deduct taxes… Just donate out of your own pocket” and “You guys literally have so much money… You can donate it and get it back within a year,” are some of the comments read In the net.
It should be noted that despite the commotion generated by this initiative, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and businesswoman Oprah Winfrey have kept a low profile, avoiding attracting more attention to the controversy.
We cannot forget that according to Forbes, Winfrey has a net worth of $2.5 billion and owns at least 13 properties in the Hawaiian Islands. For his part, Johnson is worth $270 million.
