On its opening weekend coinciding with Memorial Day 2023, “The Little Mermaid” the new Disney live action managed to raise about $117.5 million dollars at the US box office becoming the fifth best in history during the commemoration of Memorial Day.
Though viewer reaction has been mixed, 67% of critics gave a positive review. This new version starring Halle Bailey, had a 95% acceptance rate, after being the target of racist criticism.
On the other hand, Box Office Mojo showed a count of the films released during Memorial Day and their respective collections at the US box office:
Top Gun Maverick: opened in 2022 and made $160 million dollars.
Disney’s live action version of Aladdin“: opened in 2019 and had an opening weekend gross of $116.8 million.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: released in 2008 grossed $127 million dollars.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End: Its premiere date was in 2007 and it grossed $140 million dollars.
X-Men: The Last Stand: Its premiere was in 2006 and it earned $123 million dollars.
Finally for international ticket sales after harsh criticism this new version of “The Little Mermaid” managed to raise $185.8 million dollars during this weekend.
