In its opening weekend “Barbie” the film grossed an estimated $155 million dollars domestically making it the biggest release of this year and for now one of the most significant successes for Greta Gerwig its director.
The same weekend also featured Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” which grossed $80.5 million domestically, both releases have caused a furor among their followers and audiences, what has been called “Barbenheimer”.
Between the two films, a total of $302 million dollars has been raised at the close of this Sunday, but according to some analysts this figure may grow more. For Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, both premieres managed to double the predictions that many made a few weeks ago in the middle of an industry that seems to be in trouble.
“I really can’t think of any parallels ever, where both movies got bigger because of each other. Both can be considered outright home run hits, and both will perform in the coming weeks in a different way,” said Dergarabedian.
In theaters in the United States alone, “Barbie” grossed $70.5 million on Friday, and both films have little competition.
Given her record, it is almost impossible not to compare the production of Barbie with other films directed by women, such as; “Wonder Woman” directed by Patty Jenkins with its premiere in 2017 grossed approximately $38 million dollars nationwide the same day it was released.
On the other hand, this “Captain Marvel”, co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, raised nearly $62 million for its premiere.
Although Barbie won first place this weekend against “Oppenheimer”, this film directed by Christopher Nolan which shows the story of the father of the atomic bomb, it has exceeded the expectations not only of critics, but also of viewers and even of its own director.
Nolan already accumulates some blockbusters such as Inception, which grossed around $22 million the same day it was released, followed by Dunkirk with $20 million dollars.
