An investigation carried out by the University of Chicago and the University of Munich found that Americans with a southern accent may have a harder time getting a job.
In addition, the analysis found that many Americans from the South who are looking for jobs in big cities may earn less money than people with a standard or neutral accent, in this sense. it was determined that such individuals were losing thousands of dollars annually.
Likewise, the study detailed that Americans with a regional accent were penalized with 20% of their salary compared to those who did not have an accent. For that reason, 38% of southerners have chosen to soften or change their accent during interviews and work hours.
Another analysis, promoted by the Writing Tips Institute where more than 3,000 people were surveyed, showed that the citizens of western New England, South Midland and New Jersey for example, were more likely to alter their accents in job interviews.
Job sectors like customer service, media, healthcare, hospitality, finance, and retail are where your employees with southern accents are most likely to change the way they speak.
